How to Clean and Care for Your Sunglasses (So They Last for Years)

The Capo Journal · Care

Quality frames are designed to last. How you care for them decides whether they do.

The difference between a pair of sunglasses that looks right after five years and one that looks worn after five months isn't always quality. Often, it's habit. Three or four correct habits — consistently applied — decide whether your frames age well or just age. This guide covers them, specifically for premium acetate and titanium eyewear.

The method

How to clean your lenses properly

The most common mistake is also the most invisible: cleaning lenses with the hem of a shirt. It feels harmless. It isn't — fabric fibres carry microscopic dust that scratches coatings gradually, until clarity is permanently compromised.

  1. Rinse the lenses under lukewarm water to loosen any loose particles
  2. Apply a single drop of mild, alcohol-free soap
  3. Gently rub with clean fingertips — no pressure, no scrubbing
  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfibre cloth only

Never use paper towel, tissue or clothing. Never use window cleaner, alcohol-based sprays or household detergents — these strip lens treatments over time. Keep the microfibre cloth in the case, and use it every time.

Acetate improves with age — when cared for

Caring for acetate

Acetate has depth, warmth and a quality that develops with age. Avoid sustained heat — frames left on a car dashboard in summer are one of the fastest ways to warp a frame that should have lasted a decade. Avoid constant pressure, and for re-fitting, visit an optician: professional heat adjustment takes seconds, home adjustment risks cracking.

The Passaporto collection is built from premium acetate chosen for depth and durability.

Titanium is resilient — but not maintenance-free

Caring for titanium

Titanium is lightweight, hypoallergenic and resistant to deformation — but it isn't maintenance-free. Sunscreen, cologne and moisturisers leave residue that affects the finish over time, so clean the frame gently after sun or sea. Wipe the temple area weekly, and if a screw loosens, address it promptly — most opticians tighten screws at no charge.

The Eminenza collection is designed for extended wear. If you're unsure which material suits you, read the acetate vs titanium guide.

Never do this
  • Clean with a shirt — cotton traps particles that scratch
  • Use saliva, breath or strong alcohol — it strips coatings
  • Rub dry — the number-one cause of micro-scratches
  • Use paper towel or tissue — they look soft but are abrasive
  • Use window cleaner — it contains ammonia
“A good hard case extends the life of premium frames more than any cleaning product.”

The case: your best investment after the frame

Every Di Capo frame comes with a case for a reason. Each time you set frames face-down, you risk scratching the lenses; each time you drop them loose into a bag, you risk a bent temple. The case eliminates both. It isn't for storage — it's for preservation. The habit of using it, consistently, is the difference between frames that feel like the first day and frames that feel like last season.

Invest once. Care always.

Frequently asked

How often should I deep-clean the lenses?

Ideally once a day if you wear them daily. It's a one-minute job with lukewarm water and mild soap.

Can I use optician cleaning sprays?

Yes, optician sprays are fine for a quick clean. But lukewarm water and mild soap remain the deepest, safest clean.

How do I remove a small scratch from a lens?

You can't. A scratch is permanent damage to the lens or its coating. The only thing you can do is prevent them.

What if the frame loses its fit?

Take it to an optician. Both acetate and titanium are realigned in minutes. Don't try to force them at home.

Do I need a new cloth periodically?

Yes. Microfibre accumulates particles and oils. Wash it every few months, or replace it yearly if you use it daily.
